If your goal to become a truly successful and/or famous athlete, the road ahead is long and hard, and you are most likely behind. However, with drive and persistence, anything is possible.

Most people who are going to become truly recognized and accomplished athletes start early in life, loving what they do and therefore doing it often and with much vigor from a young age. Piano prodigies start playing the piano, and rarely have to be told to practice because its such a fundamentally important part of their life. People who are going to become truly great athletes often start young and practice heavily and often, and usually have at least some (often more) natural talent.

However, none of these things are required. Determination and will are, however. Some of the most talented indivduals in their fields have started later in life. If you want yourself to be counted among them, you have to devote wholly to your goal. Pursue it relentlessly.

Now, that does not mean practice all the time everyday. If you have no previous experience in running/exercising, then pushing yourself as hard as you can all day long will be very dangerous and possibly life threatening. It is important to set reasonable goals, and pursue those GOALS relentlessly and unceasingly.

Speak first to your doctor and then perhaps to a professional personal trainer. Read up on the subject. Gather information from sources you personally know to be informed. Then, when you feel you have the information to make a correctly informed, balanced decision on an exercise routine, do so.

Don't be afraid to investigate alternatives you had not considered before. Diet is closely related to exercise. You may discover a diet that is specifically suited to maximizing your performance. Investigate into things like yoga, or whole/organic foods. These are just two examples of options some people overlook because they are ';odd'; or simply just foreign. But don't be afraid to look into things you'd never thought of trying.

But always, always consult your doctor before starting a new diet or exercise routine. (Keep in mind though, your doctor doesn't have to live in your body... you do. Your doctors advice is valuable, but it is also just that... advice. It is important to consider the knowledge of informed and experienced people, but that does not make their word sacrosanct.)

In summary, you are going to have to step outside of your boundaries in order to make this happen. Lifestyle changes and mindset alterations are in order. If you want to be a truly profound athlete, it will take more devotion than perhaps you have given to anything in your life. This is true of achieving true excellence in any field. Keep this in mind. Talent means nothing, nor do genius or education, when compared to persistence and determination.
