Cheers.....I caught my first fish the other day......a brim...with CHESSE as bait...What fishing tips can you give to a beginner fisher.....?
Whatever you do, never lose the enjoyment that fishing can provide. Don't get caught up in needing to always catch the biggest or the most fish...it takes away from the pleasure and has a tendency to annoy other people. A friendly contest, agreed upon by a group of friends can be a hoot, just don't let the competitive side rule your actions. Always great to see new people getting into an activity that has brought me uncountable hours of relaxation and enjoyment my entire life. What fishing tips can you give to a beginner fisher.....?
To beggin fishing iw ould recommend the website angel fire, and search for fishing as it will give you tips on all types of fishing.
How about some homemade bait for fishing. You will need the following ingredients, water, bread, flour, garlic powder, tuna, and oil. What you do is very simply mix all of these ingredients together and then roll them into little balls.
The most important thing you can do to learn about ANYTHING is read a book.
Pick the fish you want to catch %26amp; I guarantee there is at least 5 books written about catching them.
Good luck %26amp; Good reading!
UPDATE: If you are totally NEW to the sport of angling, all forms of INFO, will be paramount in whether you catch a ';couple'; or ';alot';.
Most important info? Info on knots. Info on rigging baits. Info on your favorite lake/pond/river/Etc. Info on WHEN best to go. Info on larvae %26amp; bug hatches. Info on the correct tackle and rods/reels to use. Etc, ETC.
Patience is vital. But if your sitting on a stream bank fishing for Brim with a baitcaster that has 15 LB line, a Heavy action rod, using cheese as bait, your ODDS on catching your limit is slim to none. You could have all the patience in the World, but if you don't have the correct ';tools'; and ';info'; for the job eventually you will ';lose interest'; because ya ain't catch'N nothing!
pay attention every time you go out, ask as many questions of other anglers as you can....no matter how stupid or mundane it might seem
Learn as much as you can about the target fish as you can. What they eat, where they go every day and seasonally, when they spawn etc.
learn more than one method of fishing! It's nice to master just one, but you are going to limit yourself if you do not learn multiple methods of fishing, even for the same species.
That said, a sucker and his money are easily parted, so don't fork over your hard earned money untill you do some research. Ask around, read consumer reports etc.
One cool and easy experiment....try to fish a local body of water from the first day of the season to the last. Fish in the heat and the rain. try to fish it at least once a week, even if only for an hour. If your busy, make it an hour before work. This experiment will give you a wonderfull perspective on the seasonal differences of location, effects of light, food etc of your water. You can extrapolate the basics of this to almost any other water you'll fish. If you can I highly highlt recomend this!
I agree with what Steve S posted.
Patience is the number one thing to learn if your going to get into fishing.
Working as a Captain on a head boat and a private fishing guide, Ive seen countless people who won't get a bite for 5min and ask to go try another spot, or they just set their rod in the holder and go do something else.
Fishing is not always going to be drop the hook in the water and there's a fish, Patience pays off, although days where as soon as the hook hits the water and you have a fish do happen every so often, don't expect it to always be the same.
Being an old school River Rat who enjoys cat fishing, I can't help to think back what my grandpa and dad always told me....be patient!
Throughout the years you will have trial and errors in fishing. With every error, learn from it. Remember what works good for one person does not always work for the next. Find your passion for the sport by your own enjoyment. Don't be afraid to try new things, sometimes those off the wall ideas work!
Myself, I am always trying to catch that bigger fish. But you must learn to catch the fish first before you can think big.
There is many ways to learn about the type of fish your going after. Videos, tv programs, books and internet. There is much to take in. Types of rods and reels, lines, riggings, bait and presentation. Know where you are going and the enviorment.
Best advise I can give is to get out there on the water and get your line wet. Good luck and Best Wishes!
As AIR FLOW mentioned, anglefire has great information on fundamentals of fishin'. Go through site and it'll give ya' a lot of answers for the unanswered questions one might have, plus a lot more. Am sure it will help and ';Fish On';, to ya:)...

Note: Site has a pop-up, so be patient...
I will tell you that practice will only make you a better fisherman. Learn a few fish line tying knots and proper ways to bait your hooks. Ask your local fisherman all you can without annoying them. And of all things to learn is Patience. I like when I see clients loosing their patience while jigging for Hali. Usually after 30 min. with no hit their eating a sandwich in one hand and one of my rigs in the other when a strike hits.Sometimes they are lucky not to loose the whole rig in the ocean. 40yr exp Pacific Northwest guide
The only real thing I will throw at ya is dont be afraid to try new things. Also dont be afraid of asking other people out fishing what they are using or their techniques. Different areas require different lures/bait. And there isnt an angler out there that doesnt feel good after offering advice to a person new to the sport! Good luck and good fishing!!
I agree with Stop_makin_cents you can't ever read too many books. ;)
Congrats on your first fish...There are so many ways to fish that it's hard to choose what to tell you. So I'll just give you 2 pointers for now.
Bigger baits on bigger hooks catch bigger fish. But not always. Sometimes a little nibblet of corn or a dough ball on a tiny hook will catch a big fish too.
And
Keep your tackle box dry.
When we go fishing we usually use pieces of a hot dog weine or ham, and we catch fish.
Remember that the sport is called ';fishing'; and not ';catching';. Go out and enjoy the time away from ';real life';. Do not ever let a day without catching a fish diminish the enjoyment of fishing. The day may be even better spending it with a parent, sibling, or friend. Have fun!!!
use a pole not your hands. a burrito is probably not the number 1 choice of bait as fish have different taste than humans. sling your line out into the water and wait..... on land
