Any tips for beginner guitar playing?

I'm really excited because I'm going to join this club at the college called AI Musicians, I have always wanted to play the guitar and they told me that they would teach me to play! But guitar seems really hard to learn so do you have any tips on good playing techniques or tips to improve my playing?

I don't have a guitar personally so I'll only be able to practice at school after classes since I'll be there till late waiting for my mom to get off work.Any tips for beginner guitar playing?
Is there any way you can buy/borrow a guitar?. Bass is a lot easier to play as you only have 4 strings. Try playing polly by nirvana which is easy to learn. In time, it comes! Practice makes perfect but do it the smart way. Have you checked out http://practiceplus.info - they send out tipsheets on how to practice and i got really good from reading the info they send!Any tips for beginner guitar playing?
The guitar is a relatively easy instrument to learn to play, which accounts for its popularity.

The problem is that at first you have to build up strength in your left hand (the one that holds down the strings on the neck) and also to build up callouses on your fingertips. It's hard-going at first and you can only practice for a few minutes at a time. So it's nice to have your own guitar so you can practice 10 minutes now, 10 minutes later, etc. Don't overdo it at first or you'll really be sore and you'll hate it. EVERY guitar player reaches a point, early on, where he thinks he just can't do it, that there's something wrong with his hand or something. But stick with it, you get over that.

It's good that you're learning from others. If you have friends that play guitar they're always happy to come over and show you a few tricks. Much of guitar playing is this stuff that guitarists share with one another.

You could also do some reading on your own about music theory--the notes, the scales, tablature, etc.
Learn the scale, also in 2 weeks your fingertips will harded thats good due to the fact the when playing guitar your finger tips start to hurt so its normal, also learn easy songs like paint it back and the trooper then work your way up to harder songs, one more thing, never tune your guitar by ear or else.Trust me i poped my high E string so many times its not even funny so buy a tuner if you dont have sharp hearing
Any instrument can be really hard to play, it just takes practice. It depends how often you practice and how much you want to improve. Some of the harder chords F for example are hard, yes, but it is play-able...start with beginner chords, the easier ones and move up from there. You'll start with really easy songs, like so easy you'll master them in no time. Be patient, these things take time to learn. You'll progress as you practice and before you know it songs you had trouble playing before are now easy :)

Also learn how to properly hold the guitar and if you want to get one for yourself, get one that feels comfortable to play. You'll learn the scales of course, I don't have a book so haven't looked online yet lol but the scale progression which you'll probably play 1000 times over and over for warm ups will help you with the changes and tempo too.

Play through hard songs slowly, that is the most important thing. You'll eventually build up the speed to play at the proper tempo for the song. So don't be discouraged if a chord looks too hard to play, challenges are how you improve at playing ;)

Learning to tune your guitar by a tuner will also help you to tune your guitar by ear as well so don't rely solely on the tuner, use your ears too, this will help you become better too. Also the other flaws with tuners is they can stop working. If the battery is low or it's just slowly dyeing it can tell you a string is in tune when it's not, and you can hear the difference or will be able to eventually. The only hard part to tuning by ear is when the sound is close, but not quite there. Sometimes an instrument is never perfectly tuned and sometimes comes as close to it as it'll get.

Remember tuning for any instrument is dependable upon the weather. The weather affects the strings, so it can make them tighter or looser, or for band instruments, even cold. So don't be surprised when you go to tune one day and it's dramatically out of tune :) It's normal.
I recommend going to a Pawn Shop and checking out the guitars there. I got my acoustic for about $100 in one, though check it out because mine had a broken bridge which really affected my playing [Only cost $2 to fix though =P]

Pay attention to your hands a lot when you start playing, cause you'll start out some habits which may be bad. Keep your wrist arched so that when you put your fingers on the strings they're not laying down but your fingertips are on top of them. You'll probably catch other strings with your fingers so this is a good thing to practice on. Keep your thumb in the middle of the neck, don't hook it at the top or onto the 6th string, cause keeping it in the middle of lower will help putting your fingers correctly on the strings.

It's gonna be painful, but the more often you play the less it will hurt. If your strings are buzzing while you play a note, then your not pressing hard enough or your not completely on the string. Also, don't favor any fingers, try to use all 4.

When your strumming with a pick, try not to move your entire arm but just your wrist.

Sorry thats all I can think of right now, good luck. =)
