I am looking to invest in shares, and want to do it online. Can anyone recommend some good online brokers, preferably with low charges for relatively small initial deals (probably 拢1-2k)? I would also prefer to avoid fixed monthly charges, as I don't know how often I will deal.

If you're new to share dealing then the best advice I can offer is - Don't try to learn the basics online!
Too many variables (honesty not the least important!)
Find a local broker who will offer advice and assistance.
Lots of banks offer ';share services'; with a set fee for trades and no monthly fees.
Barclays have one; for example.
